Nicholas Orlin Radio Connection

Unwrapping the Package Posted on 2016-05-09 by Nicholas Orlin

Hello and welcome back!

Today saw my first real delve into the Radio Broadcasting course. Up to this point has been a lot of maintenance, fixing and updating my computer, learning to navigate the electronic textbook, and today, to my excitement, setting up and testing my fancy new Blue microphone! While all kind of tedious, the technical work is rather satisfying when finished and everything is working properly. Leaning systems and figuring out how to use them efficiently is fascinating to me. Which is why the first two lessons from the e-textbook are interesting.

Last week I completed the first lesson as I familiarized myself with the textbook. I'm not ashamed to say that I spent more than a little time on the hyperlinks relating to the discovery of radio waves and the almost immediate utilization of this new technology. Marconi's swift commercialization of radio was brilliant. And to think of all the ways radio broadcasting has changed the world is almost too hard conceptualize. The various FCC Rules & Regulations were also interesting, and will prove to be very important down this new road I am walking. It is always important to know the jargon of any profession, and radio is no exclusion. How embarrassing would it be to confuse a copywriter with the with the production manager!

I should be starting work in the studio with my mentor, Brian Huen, in the coming week, which is super exciting! And the next lesson is breathing and voice exercises. I'm actually doing this thing!

And as promised here are a few things I was listening to while working today...

I really like listening to Classical music if I am doing a lot of reading. The lack of lyrics makes it easier to concentrate, and the narrative quality of most classical music means that there are less interruptions in thought processes. Also, almost every thrift store has a wealth of vinyl and it's super cheap!

?In contrast, while I am in the process of writing it really helps to have music with lyrics. I just got the new Charles Bradley album "Changes" and in two weeks it has yet to slip past the fifth most recently listened to albums in my collection. All I can about it is, my god what a voice!
