Session 18: other mentees and wbls sit in
Blog;
I walked into a full house today with other mentees and a hot 97 intern. I got to listen to some work from another mentee which was interesting. I enjoyed it and enjoyed listening to Allie’s mock show. I appreciate having the opportunity to listen to her work because we are polar opposite in our methods of delivery. So hearing the diversity is important, kind of like learning off of each other. Afterward I was granted the opportunity to sit in WBLS with disc jockey Bugsy. We discussed some production aspects as well as some broadcasting important “do’s and don’ts”. I was able to watch Bugsy live in action on air. I’m enlove with broadcasting. Seeing him transition from conversing with me to on air was incredible. I sat in for DJ Enuff’s mix which was amazing.
- Unpredictable Predictability
- Intonation and punch certain words
- The production side with music etc was made much easier with technology advancements.
- Compete with yourself not everyone else
- Set your board up with what you’re going to do next (fading etc) so if you get distracted you know what you’re coming back to
- Hardest part is finding opportunities, politics is very important. The fact that stations are no longer independently owned is a challenge. One person owns about 4 stations… you have a bad experience in one you lose the opportunity to work at the other stations. Also voice over’s takeaway jobs for up and coming broadcasters. Radio is playing it safe, it cost so much to keep stations running they want to stay under the radar. Everyone seems to be doing the same thing. Stay out of the politics and work hard at your craft.
- Talking to much loses the audience..be sure to plug in music more, tight segments and tight transitions.
- Today was amazing
