Session 20

Time: 4:15-7:00 pm

Jay Dixon

  • To begin our session we reviewed my assignment which was to rerecord commercial 5 from lesson 13. He thought it was good but there are areas where I can work on my rhythm. There are places where my rhythm is staccato, individually broken up or mechanical; as oppose to flowing naturally. It may be a part of my speech or a challenge because of the words or phrases I was saying. We worked on listening to those spots in my audio. He noticed the phrases where I sounded mechanical were difficult and would cause this. So listening to it and figuring out how I would say it, even though that’s how it is scripted. Am I trying to make it to perfect? We printed the script and placed lines in the script to know how to break it up and make reading it easier for me. I then broke down the script in order to rerecord it. This reminded me of bar placement that I do when writing a poem to perform or when writing music.
  • It’s crazy because I love my voice. I love my voice when reading poetry, on air or during my daily speech. I’m finding it difficult loving it when recording endorsements or certain type of commercials. To me, I feel like my soul raspy voice may limit me. Jay Dixon said that it will work in my favor more than limit me, especially when I bring my personality into it. It makes me different. However, I’m finding it difficult to find my voice in these instances and in being confident in my delivery.
  • Rerecording notes: Much Better. My rhythm was much better. I sound good when I soften my voice at the end of phrases/words. I usually do it with my vowels. There are certain words I say with “swag” and others I’m just saying 3:42-3:45 (jazz, neosoul blues and rock). I said rock really hard as oppose to jazz and neo soul.

CH13 Assignment 2- Public Service Announcements (15-30 seconds)

  • The major difference between public air announcements and commercials is money. A PSA is a free ad given to qualifying non profit organization.
