Lesson #: 2

The hardest thing about starting over or beginning a new career is transforming your mind from one ideal, to a completely different set of game rules. The time in the station today was nothing short of a whirlwind. I got the opportunity to ask multiple questions, which isn’t hard for me at all since I’m naturally inquisitive, but the answers left my mind in frenzy. I never would have thought there were so many terms and acronyms that come along with radio. From the outside looking in it seems that radio consists of the songs played, the announcer, and a commercial added in here and there. But on the contrary, it’s so much more. From the FCC regulations, to spots, to allocated call letters, I left the station feeling quite confused. It was a good confusion though. I finally started understanding the ins and outs of this station, and where I really want to start getting my hands dirty.
Of course the topic arose about what I wanted my on air name to be. I’m still hashing out those details, but hopefully I will have it finalized by the end of this week. I love working with Mary Kaye because she’s so passionate, and gets to the point of where the money comes from in radio as well as how you can make it your “own”. We focused a lot on “irresponsible broadcasting” and how many stations bypass receiving a fine from the FCC because of the almighty dollar. Radio has definitely shifted over the past few decades and just like everything else in our society is money driven. However, that doesn’t deter me from staking my claim in this industry.
I will have the opportunity to start doing some interviews this week; you have no idea how excited I am about that. I’m all about hands on learning, and this aspect of radio is right up my alley. I must admit I’m a bit nervous to really conduct the interview and possibly getting tongue tied, but it’s all a part of the process. But hey, it seems I’ve gotten the academic aspect down..100% across the board. Your girl is WORKING!

Don’t stop following, the fun is just beginning.
