Jay and I worked on the Interviewing chapter again this week. We began our session by listening to an interview featuring comedian Katt Williams on the KBLX morning show in San Francisco. This was on the heels of Katt's recent troubles with the law so the morning team wanted to take advantage of a ratings opportunity. I personally am not a fan of Katt's comedy nor did I understand what he was saying, but I did appreciate host Mark Curry’s graciousness as an interviewer. Curry knew Katt had a rant-based comic personality that would only shine if Katt was asked few questions that would allow for thick answers. Jay appreciated Mark “resetting” the interview every now and then for listeners tuning in during the interview who otherwise may not know what’s going on (“For those of you just joining us, I’m talking with Katt Williams…..”). Another key thing I learned from this interview is the importance of relationships in creating attention-grabbing content; Mark was able to get an exclusive interview with Katt based on their friendship and Jay may be able to get a Katt Williams interview for Hot 97 based on his relationship with Katt’s promoter.
With the above notes in mind, I produced an interview with DJ Enuff. He’s a mixer/personality for Hot 97 in the afternoons and was the road DJ for The Notorious BIG. I grew up watching Enuff mix on BET’s “106 and Park” about a decade ago so this was definitely a surreal experience for me. We discussed the fruition and highlights of his career for about a half hour and I was assigned to chop it down into four separate 4-minute segments. Jay enjoyed Enuff’s storytelling as much as I did and complimented my focused questions that led him there. Before next week’s session, I will add in “resets” similar to what Mark Curry did in the Katt Williams interview.
