Twenty First Day- News/Talk Demo Posted on 2016-03-22 by Jon Francois

In the most recent session, Jay and I started working on my final demos. We agreed that my strengths are in the news/talk and morning show formats. I began working on the news/talk demo by searching through a wide variety of projects I produced and picking what I believe are the best ones to show to potential employers. This includes a man on the street report on Winter Storm Jonas, a recent interview with DJ Enuff, a commercial promoting the political drama “The West Wing, weather report, morning show-ish discussion on Adele’s Grammy performance, etc. Jay was very helpful during the selection process; for example, he reminded me that the guest or co-host in any of my segments should not overshadow me, a sports report should have background music that matches the adrenaline of the activity, a morning show segment should be related to current events or pop culture as opposed to a non-topical game that an employer might be confused by, and so forth. Jay also wanted me to start thinking about my “brand” and how it would fit with a radio station’s needs. For instance, morning shows have their “sports guy”, “news guy” and news/talk shows have their political commentators. Where do I fit? That’s something I still have to figure out as I gradually wrap up my time with this program. I have submitted a rough draft to Jay and will probably start working on the morning show demo at next week’s session.
